Teaching language

Norwegian, but the master's thesis may be adapted to English speaking students.

Prerequisites

All courses in the professional part of the programme must be passed. Furthermore, the following courses must be passed:

ME-435 Philosophy of science
ME-427 Introduction to Research Methods
And either:
ME-428 Quantitative Research Methods
or
ME-429 Qualitative Research Methods

Course contents

The student(s) will carry out independent research in a self-chosen topic related to the student´s specialisation. The master´s thesis illustrates a delimited topic within mental health work and reflects one or several of the topics in the master's programme. The thesis must be in accordance with professional requirements for scientific publications. Data sources must be included in a complete literature list.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will:

  • be able to document an understanding of the central principles of research

  • be able to formulate relevant topics for discussion in own research project based on literature

  • be able to critically assess and make use of literature as a basis for a chosen topic

  • be able to critically evaluate the choice of research methodological approach

  • be able to show the ability to analyze problems and data systematically and critically

  • be able to apply ethical principles and theories in all parts of the research process

  • be able to give a written and oral scientific presentation of a subject field

 

Examination requirements

  • Met the minimum requirements for participation in compulsory seminars and supervision.

  • Passed all the other courses in the programme

Teaching methods

The instruction consists of individual supervision and supervision in seminars with compulsory attendance for at least ten supervised lessons. The students will receive supervision as stated in a contract of supervision.

Supervised seminars

The seminars focus on the students' own work, in addition to scientific-theoretical and methodological issues. During the seminars discussions of the students' research questions as well as their research materials are an issue, as is also discussions of other research.

Individual supervision

Each student will have a professional supervisor. If the professional supervisor is external, an additional contact supervisor will be appointed among the teaching staff at the faculty.

Self studies

The master's thesis may be adapted for English speaking students.

Estimated work load in this course is approximately 810 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The master's thesis can be an individual work or can be carried out in groups of maximum three students. The student(s) receive(s) a graded mark for the submitted thesis. The grade can be adjusted one mark up or down after an individual oral examination.

In the adjusting oral examination, the student will initially give a presentation of the master's thesis. Then the student will participate in a dialogue about the thesis with the examiner(s). The adjusting oral examination will usually last 40-60 minutes.
