Bachelor level course in research methods.

Course contents

The course will present fundamentals of how to design and carry out a research project. The main objective is to present quantitative and qualitative research methods, including data analysis and application of software programs for analysing data.

Learning outcomes

On the successful completion of this course the student should

  • be able to formulate research problems/questions and design an appropriate scientific method for analysing the formulated problems/questions

  • be able to evaluate ethical aspects of applying different research methods

  • be able to demonstrate how quantitative and qualitative methods can be applied in business studies

  • have advanced knowledge and be able to apply multivariate analysis methods.

  • have advanced knowledge of methods for analysing and interpreting qualitative data.

  • be able to disentangle correlations and causality

  • be able to interpret and critically evaluate empirical research

Examination requirements

Approved compulsory assignments. More information in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

Lectures and laboratory. Estimated workload is about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

4-hour written examination which comprises 100% of the final grade. Letter grades.

Due to grade requirements for state authorised auditors, a regular examination will be held both autumn and spring.
