MAS134, Electrical circuits and digital control or equivalent.
Course contents
Design of industrial IT systems, hardware-in-the-loop verification of PLC (programmable logic controller) and the industrial IT 800xA platform of ABB, a methodology for the development of large control systems. PLC hardware definition, configuration and interfacing. DCS object-oriented programing based on IEC61131-3 standard
Introduction to design of safety critical systems, theory and related standards.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student should

explain the challenges in system architecture and programming of major industrial IT systems for process and oil-and-gas industry

define and apply a flowchart and state machines for programming of distributed control systems (DCS)

program scalable control system and design of human machine interface (HMI)

program a PLC based on IEC61131-3

choose between several alternative fieldbus depending on application

ensure and verify the data communicated

understand and implement the technical safety standards for safety critical systems
Teaching methods
Lectures, tutorials and practical exercises. The exercises / lab assignments will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria
The examination consists of two parts: Practical exercises / lab assignments (40% of final grade). 4-hour written examination (60% of final grade). Graded assessment.
