Introduction to fundamental principles in Materials Science such as crystallography, solidification, defects in crystals, diffusion, mechanical properties and steel alloys

Introduction to light-weight materials such as Aluminium and composite materials
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student
-
Shall have basic knowledge of process parameters commonly used in industrial heat treatment programs, and be able to calculate some basic parameters using differential equations

Shall have obtained working knowledge of metal alloys and composite materials
-
Shall have the necessary level of knowledge of materials required for engineers in the mechanical industry
Examination requirements
Mandatory exercises must be handed in and accepted. Presence is required during the mandatory group laboratory exercise, and a report must be handed in and accepted. An overview of the mandatory exercises will be available in Canvas at start-up of lectures.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises with supervision. Group exercise in the material testing laboratory. Digital tools are used for writing reports.
Estimated work load for the average student is 27 hours per ECTS.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
Assessment methods and criteria
4-hour individual written examination. Individual, graded assessment.
