The course thematises the role theory and theoretical frameworks play in research. Furthermore, mathematics education research relevant to mathematics teaching in schools is introduced. The course includes central theoretical perspectives by analysing and researching issues in mathematics education.
The course emphasises discussion and applications of theoretical perspectives on empirical data.
The literature addresses theoretical approaches, findings, conclusions, and pedagogical implications that are relevant for mathematics education in schools.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course the student is able to

have knowledge of mathematics education as a field of research.

have insight into learning theories, with an emphasis on socio-cultural theory and constructivism, what consequences these have in terms of learning and teaching mathematics and be able to use learning theory as support for analysing learning activities customised to the existing school curriculum.

have acquired advanced knowledge of various theoretical frameworks for analysing learning and teaching in mathematics.

apply different theoretical perspectives relevant to classroom research in mathematics.

critically reflect on the use of analogue and digital tools in the classroom using relevant theoretical perspectives.
Examination requirements
Approved compulsory work requirements and compulsory attendance, information in Canvas at the start of the semester.
Teaching methods
Seminar, work in small groups, lectures, and compulsory student presentations of specialist literature. Discussion is central to the application of different theoretical perspectives. Requirements for attendance at parts of the teaching (information is provided in Canvas at the start of the semester). Estimated workload of the course is 267 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Individual oral exam. Graded assessment.
