Prerequisites

Completed 60 ECTS credits in mathematics

Course contents

Introduction to mathematics didactic research especially relevant for mathematics teaching in 1.-7. grade levels in school. Different learning theories are elucidated from a mathematics didactic perspective. Experience with and be able to assess the use of teaching resources including learning materials, concrete and digital online resources in a digital learning environment. Insight into newer teaching methods such as reverse teaching in mathematics, and experience in providing assessment that supports the student's learning of mathematics. The course includes the development of a project on mathematics education in connection with the school.

The subject in practice
The student will in practice gain experience in the use of various teaching resources in mathematics and student teaching methods. In the project assignment, the student must do a survey or a development work where a chosen teaching method and use of specific resources are studied, analyzed, discussed and where insight is then communicated orally and in writing.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • develop an in-depth knowledge of what it means to learn mathematics and can use learning theory as a tool for analyzing teaching/learning activities within the framework of existing curriculum in school,

  • analyze the use of teaching resources in mathematics with special emphasis on the use of teaching materials and tasks, concrete, digital teaching aids and digital tablets and interactive whiteboards,

  • develop insight into various instructional methods and approaches in line with teaching goals including newer methods such as flipped/reverse teaching,

  • develop an understanding of didactic issues in primary school mathematics from an academic perspective and through this, will develop practical competence for facilitating learning through teaching and assessment in primary school mathematics,

  • will conduct a project on mathematics education in connection with the school, and present the project in writing.

Examination requirements

The teacher education students

  • approved attendance in the course

  • approved required assignments. (see Canvas for more information)

  • approved practice

Other students

  • approved attendance in the course

  • approved portfolio collection of mathematical tasks.(see Canvas for more information)

  • approved didactic work of similar scope as practice

Teaching methods

Microteaching, work in small groups, compulsory assignments and supervised work on project assignments. The students will be involved in the teaching in that they will be responsible for reading, analyzing and presenting syllabus articles in seminar classes.

Requirements for minimum 70% compulsory participation.

It includes 25 days of practice. The course has an expected scope of work of around 400 hours where 100 hours are linked to practice. Other students must perform didactic work of a similar scope as practice. Students will use and especially analyze the use of digital tools as one of many teaching resources in mathematics.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

An oral individual exam counts for 50 % and a written project work (individual og in groups) counts for 50 % of the grade. Graded assessment.
