In this course, we will examine the power and unique characteristics of the film narrative by making a historical journey through various film eras and film trends which have had a deep impact on film as we know it today. We will use historical examples to obtain greater knowledge about the possibilities of film, but also to develop a critical view on how film may seduce and occasionally mislead.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student shall

Have knowledge about the development of the film media from the time of the silent film till today, including the Norwegian film heritage

Have developed his/her audiovisual consciousness and competence by being able to see current films in a greater socio-political and historical context

Have knowledge about a broad repertoire of filmic effects

Have knowledge about film narratology and other relevant film-analytic traditions

Have a critical attitude to the power of film

Be able to carry out a scientific film analysis

Be able to apply professional knowledge to practical and theoretical problems and give reasons for his/her choices

Be able to present knowledge about the history of film both orally and in writing

Be able to discuss views and interpretations with others on basis of the themes and empirical data that has been treated in the course
Examination requirements
One written assignment and an oral presentation must be approved.
Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, films and reflection tasks.
The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.
Evaluation

5-days individual home examination. Graded assessment.
