Course contents

The student will make plans for a bachelor’s project and a plan for completing the project during the course. The plan shall include a course-related issue, including relevant theory, method and plan for a practical-aesthetical exploration. The students will get to know relevant sources and course-specific research methods, as well as knowledge on how to develop a pre-project. The course will also look at course-related issues and ethical dilemmas related to these.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall

  • have knowledge of course-related problems and issues, processes and methods within visual art and art education

  • be acquainted with research and development related to the discipline

  • be able to formulate a course-related problem, as well as to plan and explore this in a practical-aesthetic manner

  • be able to use course-specific science theory and method

  • be able to explore relevant research literature and apply methods for gathering relevant theory

  • be able to reflect on course-related and research-ethical questions

Examination requirements

  • Approved presence for mandatory teaching, counselling and seminars.

  • Approved mediation of a minor practical-aesthetic pre-project.

Teaching methods

The course will include lectures, seminars and debates. The teaching will be in groups with individual counselling. It is expected active participation in seminars where articles and R&D-work from the field are discussed. Lectures will cover topics such as relevant scientific methods, processes and issues related to art research. The students will complete a minor practical-aesthetic pre-project that will be presented to fellow students and teachers.

Mandatory presence in all teaching, counselling and seminars. More information will be available on Canvas at the start of the semester.

The expected workload is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, in accordance with the Quality System, section 4.1.

Individual 3-day written take-home exam. Approximately 2000 words.
