Course contents

The course gives an introduction to idea development and aesthetic means through practical-aesthetic work in well-equipped workshops. The students will be introduced to materials, tools and techniques that will form the basis for experimenting within art and design processes. Digital media will be used to document your work, for mediation, and to create artistic expressions. The students will get to know various formats for critical evaluation of own and others work, for documentation and for mediation of the students' own processes. The course will give the students' knowledge about different western art movements. The students' own practical-aesthetic work will be looked at in relation to theoretical frameworks. The students will be trained in professional mediation for a duration of 1 week in an art/culture institution.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the students shall

• know explorative and experimental methods for idea development and problem-solving in creative processes

• be able to use fundamental methods for idea development in creative processes

• be able to use fundamental tools, techniques and materials and experiment with these when working with visual expression

• knowledge of aesthetic means and justify choices when doing practical aesthetic work

• have knowledge of periods from western art history and aestetics

• be able to use professional terminology, both in writing and orally, in describing artistic expressions

• be able to use suitable platforms, including digital, for documentation and presentation of creative processes

• be able to present examples of art mediation through practices relevant for working life

Examination requirements

• Approved attendance for both lectures and counselling

• The students will have to have three approved mandatory projects

Teaching methods

The students will work on practical-aesthetical projects in a workshop. The teaching will be given both as group lectures and individual counselling. In this subject writing workshop and text production are also carried out. The Department for Visual Arts and Drama has a close collaboration with Kunstsilo, where the students will work in groups on art education. The theoretical content of the course will be taught both in workshop lectures, seminars and excursions. Student exhibitions will form the basis for discussion and assessment of the students' work. Work requirements include prerequisites for the students to, in large parts, be working independently outside of classroom hours. The workshops will be available for the students to use for their individual work when there are no lectures planned.

Some voluntary field trips can be expected.

The students will have mandatory presence in all workshops and counselling. More information will be available on Canvas at the start of the semester.

The expected workload is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, in accordance with the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam is an individual practical-aesthetic project, including a reflection note of approximateliy 1200 words.The project is mediated visually in an exhibition. The reflection note is delivered three days in advance of the exhibited practical work. An overall grade is given in Inspera after the exhibition.
