Recommended prerequisites

Participants are expected to have completed the course IND416-G Project management and -planning, or possess equivalent experience/knowledge.

Course contents

Conceptual understanding of design and engineering, including:

  • Classic design theory

  • Learning, gradual maturity in design

  • Interdependence and coordination theory

  • Complexity, the CYNEFIN framework and wicked problems

  • Information, communication and rhetoric, including BIM

  • Creating value in design and engineering, including buildability and customer value

Methodological approaches to manage design and engineering processes:

  • Lean design management (LDM)

  • Management of design processes in the different phases/steps of design

  • Development of a model/structure for comprehensive management of detailed design processes

  • Different project delivery models and the impact on the design processes

  • Virtual Design in Construction (VDC) (intergrating product, organization and process)

  • Last Planner System (LPS) in design

  • Agile and Scrum applied in design

  • Design and uncertainty

Other complementary methods and techniques, including Target Value Design (TDV); Set Based Design (SBD); Design Structure Matrix (DSM); Choosing by advantages (CBA).

It will be applied data and cases from the AEC industry, and so far as possible also from other industries such as the offshore industry, software engineering, etc.

 

 

 

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student will know how to:

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of development processes that often include learning over time, including project planning, design, engineering, product development and research

  • Use different development methods to ensure predictability and flexibility towards project delivery.

  • Describe and apply techniques and implementation methods to carry out project planning and product development processes.

  • Analyze, plan and execute design and engineering projects

  • Use critical thinking about methods in process innovation

Teaching methods

Lectures, possibly company visit, written assignment work. Workload is estimated to be comprised of approximately 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Assessment methods and criteria

The project counts 40% of the total grade. Individual oral examination, comprises 60 % of the total grade. Graded assessment.
