Course contents

The course seeks to highlight different approaches to ethnographic research from different epistemological and methodological positions and will present and discuss empirical data from different approaches. It will address the link in the research process between research questions, fieldwork strategies, data collection, data analysis and different criteria to validate ethnographic research as well as communication ethnographic research. Further, it will introduce videography as part of ethnographic research. Principally, the course will give insights into research and research strategies using examples from schools, classrooms, and kindergarten as research sites.

Learning outcomes

After completion, candidates

  • Have knowledge about different epistemological and methodological positions and assumptions in ethnographic research
  • Can apply this knowledge to decide the status of data and appropriate modes of analysis
  • Can make qualified decisions and reflections about the dynamic between the steps in the entire ethnographic research process (epistemological positions, research question, data collection, analysis and writing up the results)
  • Have knowledge of the use of videography and be able to reflect on when such technology might be appropriate and possible challenges and possibilities involved
  • Can master ethnographic data analysis and interpretation
  • Can formulate and discuss appropriate validity questions for ethnographic research

Examination requirements

Mandatory attendance in the lectures and workshops.

Brief presentation of candidates’ ethnographic data or plans for gathering data as well as ideas how to analysis this data.

Teaching methods

The course will take place over three days and consists of a combination of lectures, seminar discussions and workshops.

The language of instruction is English. Depending on the composition of the candidate group, teaching could be in Scandinavian.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual essay that applicates the course literature to the candidates’ own research.
