Course contents

The course develops students' ability for critical personal reflection on historical, ethical, normative and social aspects of the historian's work and practice. Students will become familiar with the unique characteristics of various genres within historical research.

Learning outcomes

Upon course completion students will have acquired the following:

Knowledge

  • insight into historical method and theory and how they are applied and discussed in contemporary historical science

  • mastery of concepts in historical theory and method

  • insight into various historical research strategies and questions related to these strategies

  • the ability to explain central principles of ethics and research ethics in history

 

Skills

  • the ability to discuss formation of research projects, including choice of research strategy, analytical levels and limitations

  • the ability to interpret, apply, utilise and assess critically various types of historical material as sources for historical research

  • the ability to assess various historical presentations¿ methodological and theoretical qualities and discover and assess relevant subject literature for future writing assignments

  • the ability to assess various historical studies in relation to theoretical completeness and social context

 

General competence

  • the ability to explain the value and relevance of various types of historical research for human acknowledgement and societal insight

Examination requirements

Students are required to participate actively at seminars through among other things completing four written assignments of 400 words each, related to one of the course modules. Three of these written assignments will be part of the final examination in reworked format.

Teaching methods

The course is based on seminars, including practical exercises and discussions. The workload is estimated to 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

A portfolio with three seminar assignments of 1000 each (+/- 10%) Bibliography and footnotes to be added. Graded assessment.
