Passed one-year programme in English (from teacher education) or equivalent.
Course contents
The course focuses on teaching English as a foreign language in Norwegian schools. More specifically, the course emphasizes learning and teaching strategies in accordance with current curricula, and on analysis of literary texts and non-fiction texts. Current cultural and political themes in the English-speaking world are highlighted. The course will also explore special challenges with English lessons in a multilingual school.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: After completing the course, students should have knowledge of

language learning theories, especially those that have characterized foreign language didactics in Norwegian schools

current curriculum and appropriate learning and teaching strategies

language didactic, literature didactic, and culture didactic research and research methods in English in Norwegian schools

relevant youth literature and cultural forms of expression and application in teaching

teaching pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and textgrammar/text analysis
Skills: After completing the course, students should be able to

explain key factors and theories in foreign language learning

analyse and evaluate critically different language learning theories

apply the subject knowledge with didactics in mind and reflected in accordance with the current curriculum for primary and lower secondary school

apply relevant methods in language didactic, literature didactic and culture didactic research

analyse and evaluate critically different types of texts and their application in teaching
General competence: After completing the course, the students should be able to

use their knowledge as a basis for further studies in language, literature, and cultural didactics and Research & Development work

apply their knowledge and skills in teaching, dissemination, supervision and information work
Examination requirements
Two mandatory written assignments and one oral presentation must be approved.
Teaching methods
Seminars and group work. Regular and active participation. Language of instruction: English. The scope of work is estimated at approx. 270 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Portfolio with two texts. Oral examination.
All parts must be passed. Graded assessment.
