Course contents

This course will focus on vocabulary, practical use of grammar, sentence and paragraph structuring. Students will develop their knowledge and command of practical English.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the class, the student

  • is aware of different aspects of the use of words and constructions (style, collocations, idioms etc.).

  • has acquired knowledge and understanding of different text types and genres, textual structures, and stylistic levels.

  • knows about the history of the English language.

  • is familiar with some of the dominant varieties of English.

Having completed the course, the student

  • can use English grammatical conventions in their texts.

  • can write different text types that conform to genre and register expectations.

Examination requirements

All students: 80 % compulsory attendance in the seminars. For the teacher-training students: Practice must be assessed as a pass. Other students: One assignment must be assessed as a pass.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Regular and active student participation. Practice for teaching-training students. The workload is estimated at 135 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1
