Course contents

The course provides a practice and theory introduction to core knowledge and basic skills and understanding about different forms of theatre. This will emphasize acters and ensemble acting.

This will encompass an introduction to the fundamentals of acting such as voice, movement, collaboration, and presence. During this improvisation and character work as well as different genres of theatre arts will also be explored.

By emphasizing the students’ own development through games, improvisation and character work, the student will gain insight into the actor’s role within a theatre production and an ensemble, while also able to contribute to collaboration and group work in a shared creative process.

Through practical work the students will get to know the theatres work possibilities, methods and techniques. The education will build round collective artistic projects and processes.

The students will gain understanding and build knowledge and experience of the many aspects of theatre production through projects, while also learning ways to decide dramaturgical and stylistic choices. Students will also get the opportunity to experience, describe, and analyze theatre performances.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student must:

  • have an understanding of a variety of theatre styles and of theatre as an artform

  • be familiar with theatre methods, dramaturgical choices, different types of staging, and historical and contemporary theatre traditions

  • have basic knowledge for professional debate about theatre and drama in the news

  • be able to describe and disseminate theatre performances

  • be able to use games and improvisation as creative process elements in theatre productions

  • have an understanding of the practice and theory of a theatre production

  • have experience with group work, collaborative and ensemble work

  • be able to choose forms of work, expressions and instruments in your own theater project

  • be able to give constructive feedback in creative processes

Examination requirements

  • Approved attendance for mandatory sessions.

  • 1-3 approved obligatory work requirements.

Teaching methods

The teaching of the course is based on an interplay between analysis, practical work, and theoretical reflection. Theory, history, and subject matter terminology is taught in context to performances that the students experience and their own creative projects.

Part of the curriculum is mandatory; details will be shared on Canvas at the start of the semester. Expected workload is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Examination consists of two parts

  • Part 1: Creative arts practice group showing. The work will span across three days and culminate in a performance, followed by a group discussion. Assessments are individual. Counts 60%

  • Part 2: 6-hourse individual supervised written exam. Counts 40%

 

Evaluation method: Graded by letters.
