Properties and physical condition of soil masses

Introduction to soil permeability and penetration

Stress, strain, and stress patterns in soil masses

Elasticity and plasticity in soil masses

Constitutive conditions for soil masses/basic properties for soil masses: cam-clay model etc.

Settlement and strength of shear soils
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student is expected to:

Have thorough understanding of geotechnics and foundation problems

Be able to predict the behavior of soil masses using constitutive equations based on experimental findings

Be able to solve geotechnical problems using traditional engineering solutions

Have knowledge of simple geotechnical applications of soil mechanics for slope stability, bearing capacity and placement of shallow foundations, piles and pile groups etc.
Examination requirements
Portfolio must be passed. Details of the portfolio will be presented in Canvas at semester start.

Lectures, assignments.
Estimated workload for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the master’s programme in Civil and Structural Engineering.
Assessment methods and criteria
Individual written examination, 4 hours. Graded marks.
