Course contents
Matrix methods in statics: calculations of trusses, beams and frames. Basic dynamics: D'alembert’s dynamic equilibrium, one DOF system, eigenfrequencies, resonance.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall:
-
be familiar with the bar and beam elements and corresponding matrices
-
be able to perform transform between local and global coordinate systems for bar and beam elements
-
be able to apply matrix methods to calculation of statically determinate and indeterminate structures: frames, beams and trusses
-
know about D'alembert principle and be able use it to determine inertia forces in simple dynamic systems
-
be familiar with the properties of one degree of freedom dynamic system
-
have basic knowledge about the design of structures with regard to the eigenfrequency
Examination requirements
Students must pass the compulsory assignments in order to take the examination.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”
Assessment methods and criteria
Individual portfolio combined with adjusting oral exam.
The grade is determined based on an individual assignment portfolio which can contain both individual and group assignments (projects). An overview of assignments and projects is given at the beginning of the semester.
Subsequent oral exam can adjust the grade one level up or down. One has to pass the portfolio assignment in order to take the oral exam. By other words, it is not possible to get from grade “fail” to minimum passing grade in the oral exam.
Reduction of Credits
This course’s contents overlap with the following courses. A reduction of credits will occur if one of these courses is taken in addition:
