Course contents

The course gives insight into integrating ecosystem services into special planning processes in the coastal zone. It provides an overview of the most important groups of environmental processes in term of their operation, complexities and natural and human interactions. Topics covered include land-sea interactions, ecosystem services, climate change, sustainability of the earth´s resources, ecosystems and biodiversity, population growth and indigenous issues relating to coastal ecology. The course also examines the impact of human activities on coastal and marine environments. It explores the complex relationships between the ecological and social values of these environments and outlines strategies and tools for their management.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the students will:

  • be able to integrate knowledge and values within the context of environmental issues, particularly global change

  • be able to promote an understanding of the causes and complexity of major global and regional environmental problems

  • be able to use a range of tools for coastal planning and management o be able to describe how a broad range of human activities affect coastal environments

  • be able to discuss how ecosystem services should be integrated into the development of coastal regions

  • have developed an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of the management of coastal environments

Examination requirements

Compulsory attendance to all exercises including approval of reports and an oral presentation of a given topic.

Teaching methods

Instruction is provided in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops and fieldwork exercises including student presentations. Estimated workload for the average student is 135 hours.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course assessment will be based on a written report on a given topic. The report is graded by letters (A-F).
