Prerequisites

Primary and lower secondary teacher students must have passed the practical training in the 4th year of study.

Course contents

5 ECTS credits of the course are common to all primary and lower secondary teacher students(italicized learning outcome descriptions). This common part addresses topics relevant to the research teacher: theory of science and methodology, research ethics, source search/use of sources and academic reading and writing.

The subject-specific part of the course provides knowledge of theory and methodology applied to various issues in the field of religion, ethics and society. The course will result in a up to 10-page project description for the master's thesis that presents and justifies the research question, research design and disposition. The project description must include scientific theoretical, methodological and research ethics issues. Through work on the course, the students will acquire a good academic basis so that they can carry out a professional and practice-oriented research project (the master's thesis) under supervision.

Teaching methods

The teaching has varied working methods such as lectures, seminars, assignments, oral presentations and supervision. Through exemplary teaching methods, students will gain experience with how to work as a leading teacher in a professional community.

Outside of teaching, students are expected to work on assignments and literature studies, both individually and in groups. A significant part of the students' learning and maturation will take place through such own efforts.

The expected scope of work in the course is approx. 400 hours, divided by 130 hours on joint courses and 270 hours on subject-specific courses.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A written project description with research question, research design and table of contents of up to 10 pages. Adjusting oral exam. Both parts must be passed. Graded assessment..
