Course contents

This course focus on main instrument teaching, interpretation and ensemble. Emphasis is placed on further developing creative and technical skills in various genres. A central part is developing the student's own musical signature. This artistic expression is developed through an understanding of style, exploring possibilities within one's own instrument and in collaboration with other musicians in ensembles. The student applies theoretical methods when investigating and analyzing artistic challenges through practical interaction and communication.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • have insight into different work-related situations in professional music life

  • have acquired technical flexibility within their main instrument

  • have broad knowledge of different stylistic features within popular music genres in relation to their main area

  • have acquired a personal artistic expression in their music making and their creative work

  • be able to handle artistic challenges in a creative, exploratory and analytical way

  • be able to apply a stylistic knowledge related to their main area in an ensemble situation within the popular music tradition

Examination requirements

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • submission of a repertoire list approved by the main instrument teacher within the set deadline

  • 1-3 approved ensemble concerts / projects during the academic year

  • 1–3 approved compulsory assignments

  • approved participation in at least 1 interpretation during the academic year

  • an approved skill test on its main instrument. The proficiency test is conducted during the course

Teaching methods

The course contains main instrument teaching, ensemble, seminars and projects. Each student is given individual tuition on their main instrument. The teaching can be organized in groups if appropriate. Ensemble teaching is conducted in regular groups and various projects. During the course, the student participates in interpretation, as well as compulsory projects and/or seminars.

 

For the students in popular music the ensemble is conducted in regular bands and in various projects. At the end of the autumn semester, the band has a studio session recording some of the material they have worked on this semester.

 

For the students in electronic music the ensemble teaching is organized in different areas such as DJ, co-writing, studio band, ensemble or sampling and Live Remix ensemble. Eligibility in ensemble may vary on the basis of student numbers.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Performing Music – Popular Music:

A concert of approx. 45 minutes. Students are assessed individually. Repertoire is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

 

Electronic Music:

The exam consists of 2 parts:

  • Part 1: An individual performance of 30-40 minutes in the form of a concert, presentation, or DJ set. Repertoire and choice of performance form is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

  • Part 2: An individual portfolio submission with 15-20 minutes of recorded music. The recorded music can consist of several productions. Repertoire is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

Both parts must be passed to pass the exam.
