Course contents

This course focus on the various aspects of the music producer's role in the studio. The student will apply a holistic approach to music production, and learn how to combine recording, programming, composing, arranging and production using digital music tools. The student is challenged to reflect their own sound and musical identity related to production.
The lectures focus on how to make aesthetic choices as a music producer in a recording session. This includes choosing the musical direction of an album and be a link between musicians, songwriters, artists and record companies.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • master various studio techniques such as midi programming, recording, editing and mixing

  • be able to use music technology as a tool when composing and arranging

  • be able to develop compositions and music productions from pre-production to a completed mix

  • be able to use relevant tools, techniques and various forms of music genres in music production

  • be able to apply technological solutions in connection with musical challenges

  • have a conscious approach to aesthetic and artistic choices, and be able to reflect and discuss these elements with collaborative partners in the studio

  • Approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • 3 approved compulsory assignments.

Teaching methods

The teaching consists of lectures and group supervision. Each student is also given individual supervision on assignments. Some of the lessons are master classes where the student presents musical material and receives feedback from the supervisor and fellow students. An overview of these master classes is presented at the beginning of the semester.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual portfolio exam consisting of two parts:

  • Part 1: A project assignment consisting of an audio product of at least 8 minutes

  • Part 2: A written reflection paper describing sound production with a minimum of 500 words

An overall grade is given for the portfolio.

Grade: Pass/Fail.
