Course contents

In this course the student learns to make popular music applying various composition and arrangement techniques. The student composes their own music analyzing and inspired by existing compositions and composers. We focus on developing creative methods and challenge the student to work independently and in collaboration with others.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • master composing and arranging techniques for various ensembles

  • be able to apply these techniques in popular music genres

  • have knowledge on how to score for various instruments within the popular music tradition

  • be able to master music technology as a tool for composing and arranging

  • have knowledge of songwriting methods

Examination requirements

  • Approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • 1–3 approved compulsory assignments

Teaching methods

The teaching is provided as lectures, in groups or workshops. The student receives individual supervision during the preparation and development of their musical material. The course provides lectures in how to write lyrics. Relevant music technology tools are applied in the course, e.g., Logic Pro and Sibelius software.

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected scope of work is 27 hours per. credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio submission consisting of a minimum of 6 minutes of music composed by the student. An overall grade is given for the portfolio.
