Course contents
The course includes work on:
- developing and building repertoire and understanding of style.
- developing technical skills and ability to express musical nuances.
- personal artistic expression within their chosen main areas.

- conducting a practice-routine that prevents stress injury.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student should:
- Have acquired a broad repertoire, with knowledge to different styles, genres and époques.
- be able to display technical and musical nuances and express musical intentions.
- have acquired a personal artistic expression in their music making.
- be able to display confidence on stage as well as a secure manner of performing.
- master different methods for effective and systematic learning of music.
- be able to conduct a practice-routine within the chosen main areas that prevents stress injury.

Examination requirements
- Approved attendance to compulsory lectures.
- Approved participation at minimum 2 concerts per main areas, organized by UiA.
- Approved participation at minimum 1 interpretation/group lesson per main area.
- Main area: One approved skill test per main area with a duration of approximately 15 minutes. The content of the test is assigned by the main area instructor. The proficiency test is conducted during the course.

Teaching methods
The course is organized both as group-lessons, individual-lessons, projects and seminars. The course emphasizes practical work, individual practice and performing within the two chosen main areas, individually and in ensemble. This includes group seminars, group-lessons/interpretation, chamber music, and concert performances. Each student will receive instruction in two contrasting disciplines, where discipline 1 represents 70% and discipline 2 represents 30% of the assigned lessons. In short periods classes may be organized flexible to make room for projects. The students are expected to work independently with the subject beyond organized teaching, hereby individual rehearsal, organizing and participation in ensembles and performances at the university’s concerts.
The learning management platform Canvas is used as a channel of communication in the programme. 80% compulsory attendance to lectures, groups and practical training is required. Expected workload is 27 hours pr. Credit, see Examination Regulations, section 13.

Assessment methods and criteria
- Part 1 - Main area 1: A 30 minutes (+/- 10%) individual performance on a classical instrument, where the repertoire is selected in discussion with instructor.
- Part 2 - Main area 2: A 15 minutes (+/- 10%) individual performance on main area 2, where the repertoire is selected in discussion with instructor.
Grading: Passed/ not passed.
