Course contents

  • Literary texts of different genres from the German speaking countries

  • Literary history, cultural and general historical overview and background

  • Literary analysis of modern literature in German

  • Introduction to basic principles of academic writing

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students shall

  • be able to read and interpret literary texts

  • have acquired central analytical techniques for the analysis and interpretation of narrative, dramatic and lyrical texts

  • be able to use basic terms in literary analyses correctly, and express themselves adequately both orally and in writing

  • be able to anchor literary texts in their literary, cultural and historical contexts

Examination requirements

All students must submit two work requirements, which must be assessed as a Pass. These work requirements are described in more detail in the term-plan.

One obligatory written assignment of approx. 700 words must be assessed as a Pass. This assignment is not obligatory for students in the Master`s programme for secondary education teachers.

For students in the Master's programme for secondary education teachers, the following examination requirements apply: The supervised professional training is assessed as a Pass.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and oral exercises. The language of instruction is German. Regular attendance to the teaching is recommended. Students are invited to hand in and receive comments on written assignments throughout the semester.

For students attending the Master's programme for secondary education teachers, supervised professional training is included.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
