Course contents

The course focuses on the opportunity for contemporary theatre practice to engage with and change the world. The course provides students with an awareness to the variety of settings and contexts that theatre is a part of, such as public debate, culture and education. The relationship of contemporary theatre with select social challenges will be highlighted. The course provides insight into current professional discourse on the role of the theatre in society, as well as historical and theoretical background of socially engaged theatre. Students will also gain knowledge of cultural, institutional and economic frameworks around contemporary theatre practice and have the opportunity to discuss these frameworks in relation to specific projects. Projects are integrated into the course. During the course we plan, implement and reflect on one (or more) project (s) that have a socially relevant theme or goal. At least one project will be realised as a collaborative project with other disciplines, institutions or community actors.

Learning outcomes

After course completion the student must have achieved the following

  • Be able to reflect on how contemporary theatre is present in various contexts

  • Be able to implement, participate in and lead collaborative projects with other disciplines, institutions or community actors.

  • Have learnt to reflect on launching, participating in and leading artistic activities in relation to both socially relevant and art-related questions and debate.

  • Have learnt to reflect on their own artistic experience and performance in relation to the function and potential of the theatre in society.

  • Have become acquainted with cultural, institutional and economic frameworks around contemporary theatre practices and be able to discuss these frameworks.

  • Be able to present key subject matters verbally.

Teaching methods

Work will be predominantly group-based, and will encompass both theory and practice, and the interplay of theory and practice.

Students will receive training and guidance in verbal communication of subject related content through seminars.

The schedule will, where possible, ensure that the different sections of the course such as practical work, lectures, seminars and conferences are completed in units.

Some classes in select subject matters are mandatory. These will be highlighted on Canvas at the start of the semester.

Expected workload for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
