Course contents

Clinical studies, first semester (Practice placement introduction)

 

  • Information about patient categories on the ward

  • Information about the ward in terms of daily rhythm, rooming, equipment storage, equipment in the room, monitoring equipment, etc.

  • Information about routines in acute situations

  • Information about fire safety and escape routes

  • Information about various partners

  • Introduction to and carrying out of paediatric nursing to appropriate patient groups in cooperation with a placement supervisor / contact nurse

  • Simulation - simple skills exercises

 

Clinical studies, second semester

  • Continuation of content from the practice placement introduction the first semester

  • Introduction to and carrying out of paediatric nursing to appropriate patient groups in cooperation with a supervisor

  • The acutely or critically ill patient and their relatives

  • Stress and crisis situations, various ways of coping

  • Clinical observations and assessments

  • Documentation

  • Administration of one's own work

Learning outcomes

The student will:

Knowledge

  • demonstrate thorough knowledge about and be able to show understanding for the paediatric nurse's tasks, role, function and responsibilities, especially regarding family-centred care

  • be able to apply knowledge to recognise different types of stress and coping mechanisms, and be able to safeguard the acutely or critically ill patient and their families accordingly

  • demonstrate knowledge about and be able to rationally apply different types of documentation, curve recognition, administration of medication and report nursing activity in cooperation with a contact nurse

  • demonstrate knowledge about the most common technical equipment that is used on the ward

  • demonstrate knowledge about contamination control and be able to practice good hygiene principles

Skills

  •  

    • be able to carry out several subtasks independently and take responsibility for observing respiration and circulation and assessing, initiating and evaluating treatment of stable patients

  • be able to apply knowledge regarding observation, assessment, planning, measures and evaluation toward the acutely, critically ill patient and carry out comprehensive paediatric nursing in cooperation with the placement supervisor

  • be able to plan and administrate one's own work

  • be able to carry out various medical preparatory work and technical procedures while focusing attention on the patient and the relatives' general needs, experiences and reactions to illness and treatment in a high-technology environment, in cooperation with the supervisor

General competence

  • be able to apply one's own knowledege and skills to achieve an awareness of one's own level of competence and not exceed it, and be able to reflect upon one's own professional performance 

  • be able to analyse and reflect upon ethical dilemmas when interacting with the patient group with the supervisor

  • be able to contribute in academic discussions on the ward

Teaching methods

All practical placements will be supervised. The student will receive information, a tour and advisement on the ward and in the hospital in terms of learning outcomes and content, and carry out paediatric nursing with a placement supervisor / contact nurse in the various paediatric wards. Focus is determined by the ward's specialisations and particular character. The student will write their own goals, make up their schedule and participate in practical theory classes.

The placement supervisor has responsibility for continual supervision in terms of the placement location's specialisations and particular character. The teacher, in cooperation with the placement supervisor, has responsibility for supervision and assessment of the student.

Reflection groups consist of students, placement supervisors and the teacher.

Clinical studies are compulsory (requiring 90% attendance). Participation in the reflection groups and placement theory days counts as a part of the practical studies and is also compulsory.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The clinical studies are assessed as Pass/Fail. For the clinical studies to be assessed as Pass, the student must fulfill the attendance requirement (90%).

The student must have the following requirements approved:

  • Submitted two reflection notes

  • Participated in two reflection groups

  • Participated in placement theory days

    • Has had the practice placement introduction approved

The clinical studies are assessed at mid-term and final assessment periods. Please refer to the separate assessment form.
