Clinical studies, first semester (introductory practice)

  • Information about patient categories on the ward

  • Information about the ward in terms of daily rhythm, rooming, equipment storage, equipment in the room, monitoring equipment, etc.

  • Information about routines in acute situations

  • Information about fire safety and escape routes

  • Information about various partners

  • Introduction to and carrying out of theatre nursing to appropriate patient groups in cooperation with a placement supervisor / contact nurse

  • Simulation

 

Clinical studies, second semester

  • Continuation of content from the first semester

  • Introduction to and carrying out of theatre nursing to appropriate patient groups in cooperation with a supervisor

  • The acutely or critically ill patient and their relatives

  • Stress and crisis situations, various ways of coping

  • Clinical observations and assessments

  • Documentation

  • Administration of one's own work - sterile enviornments and coordination

Learning outcomes

 

The student:

Knowledge

  • demonstrates in-depth knowledge of and be able to show an understanding of the operating nurse's duties, role, function and responsibility

  • is able to apply his/her knowledge to recognize various forms of stress and coping mechanisms and to care for the acutely and / or critically ill patient and relatives in relation to this

  • demonstrates advanced knowledge of and be able to use different documentation forms, medication administration and report the nursing work done in collaboration with the practice supervisor

  • demonstrates advanced knowledge of relevant main topics in relation to patient groups and is able to apply the knowledge in professional practice

  • demonstrates knowledge of infection prevention and is able to apply hygienic principles

  • is able to apply knowledge in relation to observation, assessment, planning, measures and evaluation towards the acutely critically ill patient and perform comprehensive surgical nursing in collaboration with the practice supervisor

  • demonstrates advanced knowledge of the most common technical equipment used in the department

Skills

  • is able to handle several sub-tasks independently and take responsibility for the preparation of operation fields, secure sterile fields and prevent risk factors in patient positioning and hypothermia

  • is able to carry out planning and administration of their own work

  • is able to carry out various medical regulations and technical procedures while focusing on the patient's and relatives' general needs, experiences and reactions to illness and treatment in a high-tech environment

  • is able to apply knowledge and skills to reflect on ethical dilemmas when meeting the patient group together with the supervisor

Teaching methods

All practical placements will be supervised. The student will receive information, a tour and advisement on the ward and in the hospital in terms of learning outcomes and content, and carry out theatre nursing with a placement supervisor / contact nurse in the various intensive care wards. Focus is determined by the ward's specialisations and particular character. The student will write their own goals, make up their schedule and participate in practical theory classes.

The placement supervisor has responsibility for continual supervision in terms of the placement location's specialisations and particular character. The teacher, in cooperation with the placement supervisor, has responsibility for supervision and assessment of the student.

Reflection groups consist of students, placement supervisors and the teacher.

Clinical studies are compulsory (requiring 90% attendance). Participation in the reflection groups and practice theory days counts as a part of the practical studies and is also compulsory.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The clinical studies are assessed as Pass/Fail. For the clinical studies to be assessed as Pass, the student must fulfill the attendance requirement (90%).

The student must have the following requirements approved:

  • Submitted two reflection notes

  • Participated in two reflection groups

  • Participated in practice theory days

  •  Passed introductory practice

The clinical studies are assessed at mid-term and final assessment periods. Please refer to the separate assessment form.
