Prerequisites

Bachelor of Nursing or the equivalent. Students must have at least two years of professional experience and be doing clinical work related to the topic.

Recommended prerequisites

Recommended pre-requisite course: SY-917 Relief in a holistic perspective (15 sp).

Course contents

  • The chronically ill and dying patient

    • Challenges related to patients in various age groups

    • Challenges related to patients with particular diagnoses

  • Preventative and palliative treatment and nursing

  • Existential and spiritual care

  • Grief and grief counselling

  • How to master being an aid when interacting with chronically ill and dying patients

  • The challenging conversation

  • Complimentary and alternative relief

  • Research ethics and research methods

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • have the competence to identify, assess and provide palliative care to chronically ill patients and their relatives

  • know how to handle challenging conversation

  • be able to apply knowledge and skills in various palliative methods

  • have knowledge about complimentary and alternative forms of relief

  • be able to critically evaluate the significance of their own preparedness when interacting with the chronically ill and their families

  • be able to evaluate and apply relevant recent research

  • be able to carry out a group project on a chosen issue, and to present the results

  • become a professional resource person who will contribute to professional development

Examination requirements

  • 80 % compulsory attendance requirement.

  • Two required assignments must be passed. Refer to the course booklet for details.

Teaching methods

Lectures, theme days, independent study, study groups, reflection teams, exercises and presentations of their own work. Compulsory attendance requirements.

Estimated work load is 405 hours.
