Course contents

The course provides a specialization in culture, cultural understanding and the complexity about processes dealing with communication, power, affiliation, identity and learning in a multi cultural society. The course is interdiciplinary centered around the multi cultural as a theme with different approaches. There will be provided specialization in studies and research revolving youth and youth culture in a multi cultural context directed towards teaching social sciences in lower secondary school.

For other students:

Students will work on professional development work. This development work will also be integrated into campus teaching in the form of academic supervision, planning, collaboration and presentation seminars. Multicultural communication in classroom situations and practical exercises is central to the topic.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course,the students should be able to demonstrate:

  • In-depth knowledge about the multi cultural society and the multi cultural school

  • In-depth knowledge about the Sami culture and minorities

  • Advanced knowledge about multi cultural communication

  • Advanced knowledge about different perspectives on social inequality

  • Advanced knowledge about religious and cultural conflicts

  • Advanced knowledge about Norwegian and international research on youth and youth culture in a multi cultural context

  • Advanced knowledge about interdepartmental collaboration in school.

 

Upon completion of the course,the students should be able to:

  • Analyze cultural conflicts

  • Analyze theories and perspectives about multi culture and be able to apply these perspectives in inter cultural meetings in school context

  • Be able to work with values and attitudes in social science studies in a way which considers the variety amongst the pupils, different needs and cultural and language background

  • Be able to apply theories on multi cultural communication in an independent manner in class room situations

 

Upon completin of the course, the students should be able to:

  • contribute to innovation about the multi cultural school

Examination requirements

Primary school students must have:

  • Passed practice

  • Approved / Passed work requirements as described in the semester plan.

  • Approved compulsory teaching as described in the semester plan

 

Other students must have:

  • Passed didactic work of similar scope as practice

  • Approved / passed work requirements as described in the semester plan

  • Approved compulsory lecture attendance as described in the semester plan

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, reflection, digital platforms, group work, practice, presentations and excursions.

Estimated workload is 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Yes. Subject to availability or capacity. The student has to have completed teacher education for primary school, and other admission requirements.
