Course contents

• When life becomes difficult. Experiences from children, adolescents and families in sorrow and crises.

• Various risk factors related to developing psychosocial problems; children with mentally ill parents, children living with family violence/drug addiction, divorce, loneliness and victimisation, physical and mental neglect and mistreatment, experiences from war and traumas, religious fundamentalism.

• Child and adolescent mental health; historical development, current problems and future challenges.

• Being together, social interaction and dialogue through reflection and reflectional conversation/team.

• Power, assistance and offense in therapeutic relations.

• Developing individual communicative skills.

 

Learning outcomes

 On successful completion of the course, students will:

• have skills in initiating, organising and participating in assistance based on the needs and wishes of children and adolescents, and on their understanding of their own situation;

• have skills in systemising, documenting and communicating their own and others´ experienced-based knowledge;

• have an insight into research, evaluation and quality assurance related to mental health work especially emphasising the challenges a relational focus involve;

• have knowledge about mental problems in a relational perspective;

• have knowledge about inter-subjectivity and relational skills ¿ empathy, consideration and recognition.

 

Teaching methods

Lectures

80 % certified attendance is required on scheduled lectures.

Seminars

Seminars have a dialogical approach in which the students actively participate and are invited to reflect upon their own understanding. Seminars are compulsory and 80 % certified attendance is required.

Literature studies and assignments

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A graded 5-day individual written examination.
