Course contents

The central theme of the course is the practical application of family therapeutic methods when counselling families experiencing various problems. Written presentations of personal comprehension, ideas, problems and experiences are also important.

Central topics:

  • The family in modern society - socially, psychologically and legally

  • Divorce and remarriage

  • Problems of transsexuality

  • Intercultural families

  • Therapeutic approaches to families experiencing various problems, for example neglect and domestic violence

  • Data collection methods, analysis and interpretation of data

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course the student should

  • Have knowledge of how families and individuals live in modern society and of their main problems and challenges

  • Be skilled in using ideas and approaches learned during the programme when counselling families with multiple problems, especially those appearing relevant to students' own employment situations

  • Have acquired the necessary skills to establish cooperative client-therapist relationships and setting practical goals for treatment

  • Be able to apply systemic, narrative and solution-focused approaches in cooperation with other partners and in networks

  • Be able to integrate ethical perspectives and dilemmas

  • Be able to work with issues and challenges related to the process of writing a project assignment

Examination requirements

Satisfactory attendance at compulsory sessions in seminars/groups/supervision. For details please consult the Course Brochure.

Service user project in groups with individual adjusting oral examination. Graded assessment.
