Course contents

The internship is an opportunity to work in a Nordic or North American firm as part of a student exchange program with one of UiA’s academic partner institutions.

The internship offers valuable practical experience and insight into real-world business challenges. It will put academic learning into a contextual and applied perspective.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the internship, the student should be able to

• assess and summarize the complexities of the market forces that drive business in the North American setting

• identify key practical dilemmas of the everyday work in the company

• recognize specific challenges in the actual national and local business environment

• demonstrate knowledge of the formal management systems in the company and be able to adequately compare and contrast the systems in management terms

• identify the daily challenges towards time, efficiency and customer service within the company

• define and execute tasks under conditions of uncertainty and change

• support suggestions for practical solutions based on academic analyses/ methods

Examination requirements

Approved a minimum of 200 hours of attendance in the enterprise, in accordance with the individual work-plan.

Teaching methods

The total workload of the internship program in the selected companies is approximately 200 hours. The internship work is unpaid. Daily working hours will be decided by the company in conjunction with UiA and the cooperating university.

The main work tasks will be agreed with each company in advance but shall be related to core competences of the business education, e.g. in marketing, finance, strategy and management. By the end of the internship, the student will submit a paper (12-15 pages) related to the specific practice experience. The total workload is approximately 70 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1 Information about the evaluation form for the topic is published in Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A term paper graded passed / not passed

Other information

Students will have to apply for admission for this course. The selection of candidates will be based upon grades, a motivation letter and interview. Only shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview. Limited number of places available.

There is no possibility for a re-take of the internship ORG467-1 Internship in the USA and Canada.
