Course contents
The course focuses on the organization as a whole. The main areas covered in the course are organizations' relationship with the environment and their internal innovation, and change processes. The development of the strategic management discipline, and different theories related to strategic design, planning, positioning, strategy-as-practice and competitive advantage will be given focus. Strategic development processes and how they are affected by an unpredictable environment will be discussed. Central terms in strategic management, such as vision, mission, objectives, policies, values, ethics, among others, will be explained and conceptualized.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course the students should:

be able to explain different schools of thought and theories within the discipline of strategic management be able to use analytical tools for strategic management

be able to identify strategic challenges in practice and choose approaches to solve these

be able to identify and assess challenges related to ethics and sustainability in strategic choices and responsible strategic management

be able to design a business model for a business and recognize the characteristics and qualities of different business models

be able to understand the relationship between strategy and organizational structure, and between structure, efficiency, renewal and innovation

have knowledge about different points of view regarding management, recognize different principals for management and understand the importance of management for strategy
Examination requirements
Approved two compulsory assignments. More information will be provided by the start of the semester.
Teaching methods
Lectures and group work. Estimated work load is about 200 hours.
Evaluation
Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 4.1, unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.

Three hour written examination with letter grades.
