Prerequisites

OF-406-1 Foundational issues in Translation Studies and at least 40 credits in the first and second semester of the study programme (incl. the exchange semester if applicable)

Course contents

The students will complete an independent research project with tutor guidance. The students will practice developing relevant and suitable research questions and finding and writing about literature which is relevant to the topic of their thesis. The students’ ability to situate their project within Translation Studies and to relate their findings to current debates in the field will be strongly emphasized. Research method is seen as crucial, both in terms of students’ ability to critically engage and as a bearing element of the students’ own projects. Academic writing is also an important element in this course.

 

There is no set course reading for the Master’s thesis. The students’ reading depends on the literature required for each individual thesis project.

  • has advanced knowledge of Translation Studies, including key works and texts, current issues, types of data and research methods

  • can develop a relevant and properly motivated research question for a master’s thesis.

  • can find, critically analyze and report on research literature which is relevant to their project.

  • can find relevant data and select and use the research method best suited for their project.

  • can complete an analysis and present the results.

General competence

  • can complete an independent analysis and reflect on their own results in a self-critical manner.

  • can present a research project using suitable language (written and oral).

Examination requirements

The students must submit a thesis proposal (incl. a research question), to be approved by a given deadline in the first semester of the course. In addition, students are required to participate in at least six tutoring lessons over the course’s two semesters. Students are required to submit written material for discussion prior to the compulsory tutoring sessions.

 

The students must present the work they have done on their master’s thesis during a mid-semester seminar.

Requirements for the presentation will be specified on Canvas.

Teaching methods

Students will receive individual tutoring. If multiple students work on related subjects, group tutoring can also be given where applicable.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
