NOU500 Master Thesis for Non-Norwegian Students

Teaching language

Norwegian. 

Prerequisites

Examinations in NO-400, Specialization 1 and 2 must be passed before the master's thesis is handed in for assessment.

Course contents

The Master's thesis is to be an independent research-based work, completed under the guidance of an appointed supervisor. Students are assigned a supervisor based on their project description. The scope of the Master’s thesis is normally 80-120 typewritten pages.

Upon completion of the course, the students shall

• have advanced knowledge about the thematic field of the thesis, including preceding research

• have in-depth knowledge about theory and method within the field of the thesis

Skills

• be able to plan and carry out an independent research project

• have the ability to write in a structured and argumentative manner and use the scientific apparatus correctly

• be able to assess and criticise scientific material, theories and method

General competence

• be able to use his/her own knowledge and skills to solve problems in professional and non-professional contexts

• have an independent and critical approach to scientific material and its presentation

• be able to communicate scientific problems, analyses and conclusions both to specialists and to the public in general

Examination requirements

Compulsory writing course and presentation for all the students who have not already submitted and got approval of project description and progression plan for the master's thesis. Students must have attended the compulsory supervision (4 tutorial meetings).

Teaching methods

Writing a master's thesis with individual supervision. Compulsory writing course. Compulsory supervision: minimum 4 tutorial meetings. The workload is estimated to about 1600 hours

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual assessment of the Master´s thesis. Graded assessment. The Master's Thesis is to be written in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (Danish or Swedish). The evaluation will emphasis on professional content and communicative skills. When it comes to assessment of language, the students' linguistic background will be taken into account.The length of the master's thesis is normally 80- 120 pages (Times New Roman, 12 pkt,line spacing 1,5).
