Course contents
The course focuses on how language and text vary at different times, places and in various social contexts. Using historical, geographical and social perspective, students study major characteristics of oral and written Norwegian. These are compared with the languages of the other Scandinavian countries in addition to their being discussed in relation to the linguistic climate found in Scandinavia. Emphasis is also placed on students becoming able to describe ancient linguistic developments, first and foremost in Norse, which will then be compared with the modern Norwegian linguistic system.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students should
- be able to demonstrate basic knowledge and consciousness of how language and text vary at different times, places and in various social contexts
- be able to show insight into major characteristics of Norwegian and other Scandinavian oral and written languages
- have knowledge of major characteristics of the Norwegian linguistic community as well as insight into and comprehension of the linguistic climate in the Scandinavian countries
- be able both to describe ancient linguistic developments in Norwegian (especially those of Norse) and compare these changes with modern linguistic developments
- be able to impart their knowledge to others in both oral and written formats.
