NO-215 Language, literature and new media in pre-school

Prerequisites

To start the third year of the Bachelor’s Programme in Pre-school Education, students must have completed and passed 60 credits from the first two years. Children’s development, play and learning (BUL100, twenty credits) must be included in these credits.

Course contents

The course is based on the field of study Language, text and mathematics (STM) in the Bachelor's Programme in Pre-school Education. The course expands and develops the students' knowledge, skills and general competence from STM within both language, literature and various types of digital media. The teaching in this course is research-based and aims to develop students into resourceful persons who can lead and assure the quality of the work with language, literature and new media in pre-school.

Examples of themes that are emphasized include linguistic diversity, multilingual children, documentation and mapping of language development, writing in a professional context, storytelling, reading aloud, literary projects in pre-school, film and TV for children, webpages for children, the use of tablets in pre-school and how to make animated films with children.

The course plan is based on Nasjonale retningslinjer for barnehagelærerutdanning, adopted by the Ministry of Education and Research, 17 October 2018.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the student shall

• Have knowledge of the oral and written language and language development of children at the age of 0 to 6, including multilingual and multicultural perspectives (among other Sami)

• Have knowledge of teaching methods that promote language development towards the age of school start

• ha kunnskap om barnekulturelle tekstformer som skjønnlitteratur, sakprosa, muntlig fortellertradisjon (inklusive samisk), og populær- og mediekultur (blant annet barnefilm, nettsider for barn, digitale applikasjoner og dataspill)

• have knowledge about various text forms aimed at children like fiction, prose, traditional oral narration (inclusive Sami), and popular culture and media (among others films, websites, digital applications and data-games for children)

• Have knowledge of and be able to assess the quality of new media texts and digital tools for children

• Have knowledge of and be able to apply relevant research within the fields of language, literature and new media for children

Skills

Upon completion of the course the student shall

• Be able to plan, lead, conduct, document and assess projects in pre-school related to working with language and literature

• Be able to integrate ICT as a pedagogical tool in pre-school on a daily basis and in a way that promotes development and learning in accordance with the content of the preschool

• Be able to assess and present literature and other texts to children in a good way

• Be a good linguistic role model and communication partner that promotes the childrens development and learning

• Be able to document and map the childrens language development by the use of documentation and mapping tools

General competence

Upon completion of the course the student shall

• Be able to reflect scholarly on his/her own role as a mediator of culture

• Be able to relate actively to current professional discussions in pre-school related to language, literature and new media

• Be able to express himself/herself clearly and in a reflective way both orally and in writing, in a professional context

Examination requirements

The following assignments must be passed:

• The reflection blog or written observation assignment (by agreement with the teacher)

• Two oral presentations

• Practice or academic task (academic task applies to individual students who do not have practice)

• R&D group project work and presentation after the practice period (oral presentation of academic task for single course students)

70 % compulsory attendance and 100 % compulsory attendance in practice

Teaching methods

Active work methods are central in the course. The teaching includes lectures, seminars with academic conversations and discussions, supervised group work, writing blogs, pedagogical use of digital tools, oral presentations, practice-related R&D project work, excursion, study trip (not compulsory), and independent work both individual and in study groups.

For students in pre-school education: 10 days of pre-school practice under supervision is included. In connection with the practice period the students shall carry out a practice related R&D project work in groups, which will be presented to fellow students and teachers after the practice has taken place.

Practice and all activities related to the practice, are mandatory for students in the pre-school education.

Practice is not included for single course students. These students will instead work with a task supplied by the teacher. The result will be presented orally.

The course has an estimated workload of about 800 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the course will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
