Course contents

This course contains a practical, performer-oriented part and a historical / theoretical part which will strengthen the student's ability to practice and reflect on electronic music. The practical part emphasizes advanced studio techniques, while the theoretical part examines different ways of understanding and discussing musical and technical elements in electronic music, as part of the basis for planning and carrying out the bachelor thesis.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

• be able to use electronic instruments and various methods of music production

• be able to analyze own and others' compositions

• know relevant performance-related research

• know central discourses about technology in the musical field

• know academic perspectives in the field of electronic music

Examination requirements

• Approved attendance in compulsory classes

• 2-6 approved compulsory assignments

Teaching methods

The teaching is conducted in groups, seminars and supervision in connection with assignments. In the theoretical part, musical and technical elements are examined by reading selected articles and other literature, music examples and watching video clips, followed by analysis, reflection, discussion and theory presentation.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected scope of work is 27 hours per. credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual portfolio exam consisting of two parts:

• Part 1: A sound production / music production with approx. 10-15 minutes

• Part 2: A written reflection describing the process with a minimum of 500 words
