Course contents

In this course the student focus on training the ear to identify harmonics, rhythm and melodies. The course emphasizes methods that enables the student to understand the connection between hearing and reading notes, as well as transcription. The course applies time / groove understanding and coordination of different rhythm patterns. In addition, a focus on methods for recognizing harmonies and rhythmic patterns. The course is practical and related to the main individual instrument.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • have knowledge of harmonic, rhythm and melodic structures in popular music

  • be able to explain and reproduce harmony, melody and rhythm both orally and in writing

  • be able to analyse both harmony and melodies

  • be able to identify polyrhythmics

  • be able to memorize melody, harmony and rhythm

Examination requirements

  • Approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • Approved one hour written semester exam

Teaching methods

The teaching is provided as group tuition. If appropriate, the students are divided into smaller group to differentiate the levels. The group lessons and exercises are practical with a theoretical foundation.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
