Course contents

The course consists of an introduction to music technology programs and sound editing. The student applies different approaches to sound production in a sound studio. Emphasis is placed on sound recording, sound design and aesthetics. The teaching uses digital technology and focus on microphone selection for studio recordings, audio and plug-ins, as well as mixing of different types of music productions. In addition to a focus on analogous history and the use of analogue recording technique tools. A basic introduction to PA and live mixing is provided.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • be able to use basic music technology

  • be able to make a simple music production applying analog and digital software and hardware

  • have knowledge of music technology effects in relation to their own main instrument and ensemble activities

  • be able to conduct critical reflection on music technology issues

  • Approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • 1-3 approved compulsory assignments

Teaching methods

The teaching will be conducted in groups and consist of practical work, workshops, lectures, in addition to seminars, supervision and self-study. The work content will be both theoretical and practical nature. Digital studio tools such as ProTools and Logic Pro are applied in teaching, in addition to a number of plug-ins, analog and digital hardware.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The study program manager determines-in consultation with the student representative-selected evaluation form and whether the courses should have mid- or final evaluation in line with the quality system chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio submission consisting of:

  • a practical 10-minute audio production task that can consist of multiple recordings

  • a written description of the process of at least 1500 words
