We encounter many technical challenges and different types of digital tools and software in our everyday life. Some of this might be of great help; others can prove to be dangerous. Sometimes it can also be difficult to determine which challenges are real and which ones one can be ignored. This course will provide a basic understanding to the basic rules you need to follow when navigating online, how to find necessary information, and being able to evaluate the information. The course will give an introduction to privacy protection and GDPR, and how to identify and secure personal data in multimedia projects. The course will also provide an overview of social media and the opportunities and challenges it comes with. The last part of the course focuses on citations and the correct use of references.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student should:
- Be aware of possible challenges when navigating the web.
- Have knowledge of virus and other malware.
- Define some of the possibilities and challenges concerning the use of social media.
- Have knowledge of acts and regulations about privacy protection and GDPR
- Be able to identify and handle sensitive personal data in multimedia projects
- Know the concept of «Fake News» and develop strategies for verifying information online
- Understand resource citations and referencing in academic writing.
Examination requirements
Compulsory assignments must be approved in order to take the examination. Information about compulsory assignments will be given in the LMS in use, at the start of the semester.
Teaching methods
The course is posted in its entirety online and can be worked on individually.
Detailed study guides with learning tasks and activities, learner focused approach with tutor support, many-to-many communication, negotiation of meaning in asynchronous threaded discussions, video lectures, peer tutoring and online quizzes. Assignments relevant to all the learning objectives will be given and these assignments must be passed to sit for the exam.
Expected workload for students is 200 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Admission Requirement if given as Single Standing Module
Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the master’s programme in Multimedia and Educational Technology.
Assessment methods and criteria
4-hour exam at home. Pass / fail.
