Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student should:

  • have comprehensive understanding about what constitutes quality within the arts
  • have a comprehensive understanding of research trends on aesthetics, performance practice and songwriting
  • be able to express individual commitment and personal values towards music-making
  • have a thorough knowledge of the theoretical foundations of aesthetics of popular music and popular music theory

Teaching methods

This course will provide the student with fundamental theory of the aesthetics of music, focusing on issues of musical meaning and value and on the problems of musical description and criticism. Students will be engaged in readings and discussions on rhetoric, lyric writing, melody and harmony, the assessment of quality in art and the role of art in society at large.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
