Course contents
Theoretical knowledge and methods for control of dynamic systems and practical applications of control theory. Mathematical modelling of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems in frequency and time domain (differential equations and transfer functions). Negative feedback, design and analysis of block diagrams. Transfer functions, zeros and poles, analysis of first- and second-order systems by examining the time response (stability, steady state error, overshoot, settling time, rise time). Frequency response methods and standard forms. Stability and performance analysis of a control system using frequency response (Bode plots, gain margin, phase margin, bandwidth, steady state error). Practical PID control. Frequency response design, cascade controllers and feedforward control. Use of simulation tools.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

model simple linear mechanical and electrical systems and describe such systems as differential equations, transfer functions and block diagrams

dimension and tune the parameters in a PID controller using Ziegler-Nichols method

analyse stability and performance of a control system using the methods in time and frequency domain

understand and use frequency response methods for design of PID and lag/lead controllers

use Matlab to analyse, develop and simulate a control system
Examination requirements
Satisfactory submission of compulsory assignments. Information will be given in Canvas at the start of the semester.
