Learning outcomes
The student is able to
-
use algebra as a language to describe situations and to solve practical problems.
-
factorize and expand algebraic expressions, calculate powers, roots and simplify rational algebraic expressions.
-
use the sigma notation to represent series, and use finite series in practical situations.
-
give mathematical proofs using various techniques that exist, in particular mathematical induction
-
apply the perfect square trinomials in different situations, and in particular use them to solve quadratic equations.
-
represent complex numbers in Cartesian, polar, and exponential forms and translate between these forms.
-
use de Moivre´s and Euler´s formulae and the technique for computing n´th roots of unity.
-
specify and use the characteristic properties of the natural numbers, the integers, the rational numbers, the real numbers, and the complex numbers.
-
give examples of algebraic groups and determine whether a structure is a group or not.
Examination requirements
Required assignments must be approved, see Canvas for more information.
Teaching methods
Lectures, work in small groups and compulsory assignments. The course has an expected workload of around 200 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
