Teaching language

The course language is English. 

Prerequisites

The participants must be enrolled as a Ph.D. student at a relevant Ph.D. programme. 

Basic research knowledge equivalent to master´s level is required within the fields of either arts, education or mental health. 

Recommended prerequisites

Basic knowledge of various professional practices within arts, education or mental health, but not required. 

Course contents

This PhD course will address questions about being human today and discuss current challenges within art, mental health and education from ethical, political and practical perspectives and within various research fields. An aesthetic angle and the art context will be the particular point of departure.  

The course will thematize how existing norms within our practices can be disrupted and propose how other alternatives and possibilities which incorporate aesthetic and democratic concerns. 

Learning outcomes

After completing the seminar, the candidates: 

  • Will have insight and understanding of ethical and political challenges and possibilities in art, education and mental health 
  • Can critically reflect on established professional practices and knowledges within the interdisciplinary fields of arts, education and mental health  
  • Will be able to apply interdisciplinary theoretical knowledge perspectives in the exploration of relevant practices within the fields of arts, education or mental health 
  • Have the ability to contribute to the development of research-based knowledge, theories and methodologies as a base for practice transformation 

Examination requirements

The course days are obligatory, and every candidate must hand in a paper after the course.  

Teaching methods

The teaching and learning methods will consist of a combination of lectures, seminars and presentations based on the lecture topics and the candidates’ own ongoing research work. 

The course language is English. 

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final paper is a 3000-word essay based on a self-chosen topic related to the course content. The selected topic must also reflect the candidates’ own experiences during the course program. The essay must be delivered within two weeks after the end of the course. The assignment will be graded as "pass" or "fail".
