Course contents

The course focuses on contemporary visual phenomena. The term visual culture is used to describe a field where the traditional categories such as art and architecture are being expanded to include, amongst others, photography, cartoons and more. This incorporates reflexive and creative approaches to relevant contemporary themes. Photography, pictures, video and web mediation will be tools used to work on documentation and production within the specific subjects being covered. Theory on visual culture and aesthetics is an integrated part of the course.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall

  • be able to clarify terms related to theory regarding visual culture and aesthetics.

  • be able to analyse and discuss issues related to visual culture.

  • be able to assess various types of objects or projects related to aesthetic and communicative aspects, amongst others, where formal, material and elements of content are included.

  • be able to reflect on the use of aesthetic and communicative methods in own creative works.

  • be able to develop individual expressions or projects based on an explorative approach to relevant and contemporary themes.

  • Approved presence for mandatory lectures and counselling

  • Approved two mandatory assignments

Teaching methods

The works will be done both individually and in groups and will be both practical and theoretical. Part of the work is organized in projects. Teaching will consist of workshops, trials, lectures, seminars, self-studies and supervision. The learning will integrate both practical and theoretical approaches to various relevant themes.

It is mandatory to be present in all teaching situations and counselling. More information will be available in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Expected workload is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual practical exam that also includes a written part where the student reflects on a set of given relevant aspects of the assignment. The practical component will count for 60% of the grade, and the written part 40% of the total grade. More information available in Canvas at the start of the semester.
