Course contents

The course will focus on various aspects related to site-specific art. The students will gain experience with different sites and contexts linked to these: The physical, phenomenological or cultural site, sites related to community involvement and sites as a part of an ecologically connected totality.

During the course, site-specific problems and expressions will be highlighted. Themes regarding art in public spaces and socially engaged art forms will also be discussed. Site-specific art can often be of a temporary character, and use of digital tools such as photography and film will be suitable methods of documenting and presenting the students work. The course will implement writing workshop related to text production within various genres. A variety of exhibition productions and mediation strategies will be a part of the course.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the students shall

• gained knowledge of forms of expressions and discussions related to site-specific art expressions.

• be able to describe specific locations distinctiveness through analysis and use this in site-specific creative work and as a starting point of different types of art practices.

• be able to use perception and awareness of a specific location, as shown through creative work in a variety of environments.

• master principles related to digital photography and photo editing both as a tool for documentation as well as individual creative expressions.

• master course-related terminology for production of written documents relating to own practical-aesthetical works as well as various written mediation formats.

• be able to convey course-related reflections and assessments of personal and other peoples site-specific works based on relevant theory.

• Approved mandatory presence in lectures and counselling

• Two approved site-specific projects

• Two approved written tasks

• Approved oral presentation

Teaching methods

The course is based on teaching in- and outside of workshops, as well as lectures and counselling, both individually and in groups. Group critique as a method for learning will be used when it comes to student work. The teaching will be divided into both a practical and theoretical approach to these various themes:

It is expected that the students will work individually outside of the planned instruction time. The students will have access to workshops outside of the instruction time.

Both excursions and voluntary field trips are planned for the course.

Mandatory presence in all workshop instructions and counselling. More information will be available in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Expected workload is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of an exhibition of a practical-aesthetic project containing a written part. The project will be based on a specific location. The students will be given the exam with a written deadline two weeks in advance of the deadline for the entire project. The mediation of the practical project and the written part will be evaluated together.
