Course contents

The course gives insight into important theory and practice on database systems, and use of modern development tools. Students will gain experience in the practical use of current database development tools through the process from a data model to a complete, user friendly database system.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate skills in analysis, design and construction of a relational database, using current development tools

  • demonstrate insight into database administration

  • demonstrate insight into development trends in database technology

  • program procedures, functions and packages in modern database tools, e.g. Oracle PL/SQL, MySQL or similar

  • analyze database and query performance

  • administer a database including storage management, user privileges, backup and other relevant operational tasks.

  • describe various types of NoSQL databases

Examination requirements

Compulsory assignments must be passed.

Teaching methods

4-9 hours of organized teaching (lectures and lab/group work) per week. The standard work load for 7,5 ECTS is 210 hours per semester.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

A 4 hour written, individual take-home exam comprising 60 %, and a portfolio assessment comprising 40 %, both of which must be passed. Details regarding what must be included in the portfolio will be posted in Canvas at the start of the semester. Grading scale A-F.
