Course contents

The Norwegian Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act required information technology to be universally designed, that means accessible to everyone, including users with disabilities. This course provides a broad introduction to universal design of documents, web pages and information systems. The course will cover web page accessibility, digital assitive technologies, principles for design, development and evaluation of universally designed digital solutions, and related laws and regulations. A big emphasis is put on understanding and respect for user diversity and that good universal design builds on flexibility rather than  «one size fits all».

Learning outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Understand human and technological diversity and will be able to take this into account in planning and development of information systems
  • Identify and suggest solutions for barriers that people can encounter when interacting with digital documents, web pages and user interfaces for information systems
  • Plan and participate in user centered design and development of universally designed information systems
  • Apply methods for user testing and heuristic evaluation of user interfaces of information systems
  • Know the content of national and international legal regulations and recommendations for universal design of web pages and information systems
  • Master inclusive terminology in interaction with and discussion about users of information systems
  • Create universally designed documents

Students must pass the compulsory assignment(s) in order to take the examination.More informations in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

The teaching is provided as lectures and guided group work. Estimated work load is 210 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio assessment with the following requirements:

  • Two group project reports (85%)

  • One individual reflection note (15%)

The portfolio is given one individual grade A-F
