Course contents

Routing protocols in IP networks, OSPF and wireless OSPF; QoS architectures in the Internet and QoS provisioning in 3G/4G mobile systems; Multicast in multi-hop wireless networks; Medium access and networking mechanisms in cognitive radio networks; Layer 2 and Layer 3 issues in cooperative communication networks; Capacity and throughput analysis of wireless networks; Topology control in multi-hop wireless networks; Performance analysis and simulation of wireless networks.

 

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to:

  • have the forefront knowledge about a number of state-of-the-art technologies in future mobile and wireless communication networks

  • identify two or three potential research topics in mobile and wireless communications, covering mainly layer 2 mechanisms and layer 3 protocols

  • propose his/her own solutions to one of the identified problems and evaluate the performance of the proposed solution.

Teaching methods

Lectures, student presentations (one presentation for each student), group discussions, exercises, etc.

Assessment methods and criteria

Part I: Oral examination, 50%;
Part II: Technical report in the format of a publishable scientific paper, 50%.
Evaluation: Passed/Failed.
